Lesson Five: Hosting a Diplomatic Reception

Before students enter class for this activity, small tables with signs for each empire should be set up around the room.

Activity 1. Setting Up a Diplomacy Reception

Students spend 5 –7 minutes setting up for the reception, decorating their space to represent their own empire and creating an appropriate space for hosting another empire. Students should bring a tablecloth, place settings, pictures, maps, and music.

Activity 2. Delivering the Toast

One diplomat from each group delivers a toast to the empire they have chosen to invite to the reception. Each empire takes turns delivering a toast.  It is not uncommon for one empire team to receive several toasts while one or two are not toasted at all. This helps students understand which empires were desirable trading partners.

Activity 3. Informal Relationship Building

After all toasts are delivered, students are given some time for informal relationship building. This includes visiting each empire’s space and engaging in informal talks before writing formal trade treaties in the following lesson.

As an exit ticket, students are to evaluate the reception by ranking the empires into the ones with which they would like to trade from most to least desirable.
