Upstander Academy: Rethreading the Needle of Native American History through Land and Water-Based Learning
This institute will give participants an immersive understanding of Native American history and contemporary realities in New England where the colonial narrative remains thick and largely uncontested. With mostly Native faculty, the institute will help teachers increase their understanding of pre-American Revolution history as they ground themselves in land-based histories of Tribal Nations. With deepened content knowledge, participants will expand curricular offerings and bring nuance to conversations in their communities about the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Institute will create space for participants to formulate new discussion questions to bring to their classrooms or public history spaces.
