Rethinking the Gilded Age and Progressivisms: Race, Capitalism, and Democracy, 1877-1920

The Chicago History Museum, University of Illinois Chicago, and Loyola University Chicago invite teachers to “Rethinking the Gilded Age and Progressivisms: Race, Capitalism, Democracy, 1877 to 1920.” From July 6-25, 30 participants will deepen their understanding of this period through readings, discussions, lectures, inquiries into primary sources, and exploration of Chicago’s landmark historical and cultural resources. The institute creates an intellectual space to contemplate and debate how individuals and groups defined, reformed, and shaped American democracy. Participants will leave “Rethinking” with the current scholarship of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (GAPE), along with classroom-ready teaching materials.
